A few days ago I saw a male House Finch acting rather oddly. He was on the ground way too much, and would not fly away when I came close. When he did fly it was very slow. I thought that he had probably had a close call with a hawk or cat, and was injured. The next day I noticed he was

Does anyone have an opinion whether hummingbirds prefer the store bought red nectar or just plain old 4 parts water to 1 part sugar? I am not having any luck attracting them to my feeders. I have seen a few females in the yard feeding on my flowers, but they don't even go up to the feeders,

Today, at Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area in Anoka county, I saw a pair of Black-Billed Cuckoos. They were hanging out by some of those big, white caterpillar nests that hang from branches. Also today at Carlos Avery ... Olive-Sided Flycatcher, Great-Crested Flycatcher, Veery, Scarlet

I think the unroasted or raw peanuts would be better for the birds. Most grocery stores only have roasted peanuts. I could be wrong on both accounts though. Thank you all for your replies. _ Stay in touch when you're away with

was covered with them. Wow, are they difficult to photograph though. Also, I finally saw a male Wood Duck up in a tree, a strange sight, at least I think so. Other birds were; Great Egrets, Great Blue Heron, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Bluebirds, Turkey Vultures. Todd Merefield

. The Brown Thrasher was putting on quite a show. It is amazing the amount of songs they have in their repertoire. There was also a big turtle near the side of the road. The shell was about the size of an Army helmet. Todd Merefield

[mou] Where are the female Red-Winged Blackbirds?

I am curious if anyone knows why I do not see any female Red-Winged Blackbirds. I have dozens of males mixed with Common Grackles in my backyard. Is it possible the females have not migrated north yet? Or are they already incubating eggs perhaps? I am in Anoka County.
