The Great Blue Heron that’s been trying to forage in our drought-and-contractor
destroyed pond is back again. But it seems to be in distress or sick. I can’t
imagine it’s finding anything to eat. 😟Is it normal for Great Blues to still be
in Dakota County at this time? Should I call a wild bird r
Dear all, there is a large great blue heron rookery in the Rochester area
that is being threatened by a developer. See this article today from our
local newspaper. This restraining order is in place only for 20 days I
believe. There is a Facebook group dedicated to trying to save this rookery

Today while at Courage Kenny (the new name for Courage Center) I spotted a
Great Blue Heron in the creek.
The actual location was on the other side of the fence as the creek runs
into the golf course.
Fun.

Was driving from the headquarters to the shop earlier this afternoon, and the
osprey flew over my car - between HQ and Blue Hill Trail, on the norther/river
side of the road. Not close enough to see leg bands by the time I got my
binocs on it. There was a great blue heron flying along the St.

I scoped the Great Blue Heron rookery North of the Camden Avenue bridge on the
Mississippi at 2:30pm. About 3/4 of the nests are taken by at least one Heron.
It occurs to me now that I should have counted them, and the number of nests.

I stopped by the North Mississippi Regional Park to look for Great Horned Owls
nesting in the Great Blue Heron rookery. I saw none, though I was there for 1
1/2 hours.
I did see 6 GBHE on 4 nests, and also saw mating behavior and one pair
copulating.
Here is a map link to the park.

I've seen that behavior in the Great Blues before--up in Sherburne
NWR. It was the middle of a very bright, sunny, summer day. I wasn't
sure if it helped the bird see its prey, or the larger shadow deceived
the prey as to the bird's shape and impending spear-action.
