Adding to the chorus of red crossbill announcements, I saw three of these
great favorite birds flying from a sapling ash or similar such tree to a
red pine beside Hartley Pond at Hartley Nature Center this morning. Two
birds were the old gold of frostbitten goldenrod and one was the red of a
certain dark historic lipstick or red-orange crayon; I can't name another
bird that's exactly that shade of red. None had wingbars, and they gave
that diminutive syllable in flight that characterizes them as a kind of
bird too preoccupied with getting places to have very much to say--internal
remarks only.
