Hi all, Here are some recent sightings from guiding in the Bog the last few days:
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL—We found this frosty-faced bird along McDavitt near the first house south of the bog stretch. But look for it anywhere along the bog stretch as it has been seen at least 4 times in last month hunting along the road. GREAT GRAY OWL—Just north of the Admiral Rd feeders at dawn. BEST BETS...Slowly drive McDavitt, Admiral, Nichols Lk Rd at dawn and dusk. BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS—We were treated to TWO male Black-backeds near the intersection of McDavitt and the south logging road/trail (about 2.5 miles N of Sax Rd). One was drumming frequently. All my BBWO sightings this winter have been at this intersection! Snowshoes and some bushwacking may be in order for the motivated, as they are rarely visible from the road. NORTHERN GOSHAWK—Fly-bys on Arkola/CR52 near Cotton. Also along CR133 near intersection with CR7 SNOW BUNTINGS—Several locations recently...Best chances along CR7 N of 52 and S of Zim Rd, Admiral Rd S end in open area, CR52/Arkola near the bridge over the St. Louis River ....AND THE USUAL SUSPECTS: BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES—Seen yesterday along north end of Admiral in alder swamp. Also look near Meadowlands. PINE GROSBEAKS—Loretta's feeders along Kelsey-Whiteface Rd (see birding map at www.saxzim.org), Also at Friends of Sax-Zim Bog's Welcome Center at Owl Avenue. EVENING GROSBEAKS—At the feeder on CR444 (Take Zim Rd/CR 27 west to CR5, Continue west to CR444 and go N. House with feeders is on the east side (Can't miss...Lots of signs including "Welcome Birders" and a box for donations) MORNING IS BEST! BOREAL CHICKADEES—You may need to make several trips to the Admiral Rd feeders for these guys...Usually come in every 20-40 minutes. Bring peanut butter or suet to place at the feeders. SNOWY OWLS—3 (Zim Rd and Greenfield, along CR7 near Zim Sod (or on top of their rooftop antenna!), and along CR7 just south of Zim on west side) N HAWK OWL—Same guy still being seen along Owl Avenue about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile S of CR52/Arkola. RUFFED GROUSE—could be anywhere. Best bets Lk Nichols Rd at dusk/dawn. Look for them feeding in tops of birch or aspen. FYI—No Redpolls, White-winged Crossbills, Rough-legged Hawks, Bohemian Waxwings reported in the bog this winter (since mid December) Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center Grand Opening Saturday March 8th!
