Many thousands of ducks on Lake Pepin. In particular, lots of lesser scaup, ring-necks, canvasback and a smattering of buffleheads, hooded mergansers, common mergansers (where I was near Lake City rest area A flock of perhaps two dozen Fox Sparrows at Frontenac (Hill Ave. on south edge) One great egret, a couple great blue herons and about a dozen Hooded Mergansers at the Bay Point Marina Park in Red Wing. Did you know that if you shine UV light on Puffin beaks they shine like glow sticks? To test this they had to protect the Puffin eyes with special "sun glasses". The upper Midwest Sandhill Crane Count is this Saturday at first light. If you are interested, let me know and I can get you more details and/or put you in touch with a county count coordinator. It helps, if you already know a location where cranes nested last year or have settled in this year. I do know that we do have some locations around Dakota County that I do not have covered yet.
