Your 2nd search is wrong. Change sub to base.
Also, whenever you are searching you should check your results. i.e.:

i have inherited an iplanet 5.0 directory server
on solaris 2.7.
i start the console (startconsole) and when i select the directory server,
then the open button, i see:
opening server window
and the blue progress bar at the bottom of the console, but
nothing ever happens.

I've posted some basic plans for upcoming LDAP feature work at

those timing estimates are rough guesses; I'll try and keep it updated
