Everybody has to make their own choices from the local
news media menu. It would be great if Minneapolis
were served with the kind of television and daily print
journalism that I would enjoy spending my time with.
But we just have what we have. There's *no point*
to complaining about the quality of these media if
we don't like what we get. In fact, it's unfair
to the Star-Tribune and other commercial media companies.

They have to operate as they do because it maximizes
the size of the audience that they can sell to their
their advertisers. Any other choice would be suicidal
in a winner-takes-all competitive environment.

Participation is optional, and there's no duty to contribute
one's time to these businesses for resale. I don't own
a television or subscribe to a local daily. They've chosen
their target audiences, and I'm just not in one. I can
appreciate their choices, too. They're *not* being wicked
or incompetent. Quite the contrary, they're doing
smart business.
