It is a sad situation, that could have been saved by spending .5% of

One-half percent, huh? Let's see, I just ran some calculations and found
that with that amount of money I could...
Buy a season ticket to the Twins.

Buy 2/3 of a class room of Math books to empower the next generation to
see through voodo economics.Buy 1/2 of a new computer for a school (Well,
actually *I* could build a full system for a school but we're talkin'
retail.)
Get a month ahead on my mortage.
Get a month ahead on my student loans.

Donate a student loan payment to a Legal Aid Attorney who will help
dozens of needy people in that month.Donate a couple of student loan
payments to a teacher. Donate it to my favorite charity.

Invest it for my retirement.
Invest it for my child's college.

I could give it to a bunch of millionaires so they can keep raking in
MORE profits.
Geee, I dunno, seems like a tough call.

List of Stupid stuff My Tax Dollars are Used For:
1.Mayor's husband's car payment
Moving a decrepid theater 1/2 block
New ashtrays installed outside city hall
Maybe a stadium isn't so crazy after all.

Where did that come from? The last time I looked that was illegal. Do you have any evidence of this?

Congratulations, Robert, I didn't say raise taxes by .5%, I said .5% of
taxes paid. So this is not .5% on top of an 8% tax rate, this is .5% of
100% of taxes collected. I mentioned a tax increase of .5% and not a tax
rate increase of .5%. That was misleading. I am talking about a much
smaller bite, and I'm talking about all taxes paid by all taxpayers,
including corporations.

2001-11-13 Thread Walt Cygan

This doesn't change the original premise that somehow slipping a little
more tax in under the radar won't be a big deal. The problem is still
that this means you are putting the priority of a stadium higher than
all the other programs that could benefit by that .5%.

And what about the Vikings? Can anyone imagine spending $500 million on
a stadium just for the Vikings, which could be used for a maximum of 12
games per season (2 preseason, 8 regular-season, 2 playoff)? Hey, it's
just .5%.

How about another stadium for the 'U'? Not that Pres. Yudof couldn't
find other uses for the money, I hope, I hope, I hope.

Of course the streets around the city are crap. Not to worry... how
about another .5%?

Where does this thinking stop? How about another 2 or 3 downgrades in
the city's bond ratings?

I don't remember the name of the guy that you appeared with on ESPN2 on
Sunday who used to own part of the Mariners. His point was that no one
can make money in baseball. The game is in chaos. Why can't they do this
without us? The latest case can be viewed at
http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/1113/1277609.html. Andruw Jones from
Atlanta gets a 6-year contract extension worth $75 million. He hit 34
HRs, drove in 104 and hit a robust .251 last year. How in God's green
earth does he get $75 million? It makes the vaunted Kirby contract look
like chump change.

If the folks with pockets far deeper than mine are willing to get into
this mess, so be it. Let their egos lead their wallets. But please leave
mine alone!
