I write to inject a note of caution about the prospects for an eight-lane Lake Street, not wanting folks to over-react to my article in Friday's Star Tribune. The caption that was supposed to go with the graphic showing eight lanes was edited at the last minute in a way that left the impression that an 8-lane design is more likely than it is. No nefarious intent; the editors were merely trying to shorten the caption. The eight-lane option is one that traffic engineers devised early on as their ideal solution to handling the potential number of cars on Lake with full access to 35W and Nicollet reopened. This produced objections both from some members of the advisory committee, and from the would-be developers of the Kmart site. The project managers now say they think they can do it in seven lanes. Keep in mind, as the graphic shows, that this would only be for a one-block section of Lake, between Nicollet and 1st, and only if there's full freeway access and Nicollet reopens.
