Re: [Mpls] Hennepin County Rolls Back Smoking Ban
It better not be. I hope this spells the end of Peter McLaughlin's political career. This is among the most blatant pieces of undue influence I've ever witnessed all by a few old DFL cronies like John Derus and Lou DeMars to the detriment of the public interest and the public health. The hubris and arrogance is appalling. McLaughlin no longer deserves to be in office. And I hope any restaurant that caves in and allows smoking goes down not up in flames. Don't know how it will play out politically, but it gives more ammo to a potential opponent who is anti-stadium and pro-smoking ban. The name Gary Schiff comes to mind. Any others lining up? One of the reasons cited for Peter's huge loss to RT was his flip flopping on this very issue. You would think that would tell him that maybe people really do care about this issue and it would be prudent to listen to them. Perhaps he should use some of that bar money he received and get his eyes and his ears checked. This was an easy one to see, and the people were speaking pretty loudly as well... Is this the same Peter McLaughlin who never distanced himself from the blatently false attack ads brought out by the Police Federation meant to play on people's fear? Is this the same Peter McLaughlin who took money from mostly northern Hennepin County based bars interested in a repeal of the smoking ban, changed his vote, annd called it a coincidence? The same Peter McLaughlin who critisized RT Rybak for accepting contrbutions from individuals with ties to companies who do business with the City of Minneapolis, yet he himself took money from the companies themselves? The same Peter McLaughlin who's personal integrity has been compromised a few times by affairs and divorces, yet decided to open a personal attack on RT by questioning him about sending his children to private school? Substance and Integrity? As the character Inigo Montoya so aptly put it in the movie Princess Bride: I do not think that means what you think it means. From what the articles says the ordinance covers mostly traditional bars and some bars attached to restaurants, NOT restaurants. Can you still order drinks in the restaurant without going into the bar? I hope that now the Minneapolis City Council will consider allowing its citizens a choice as well. Re: [Mpls] Hennepin County Rolls Back Smoking Ban
Finally something to be encouraged about in regards to local government. Common sense that we all can live with. This vote is a victory for everyone.. and for freedom. Everybody wins with this vote, even those who so zealously tried to give away to the government their free will for the illusion of safety. Hopefully the Minneapolis city council will realize that freedom and compromise is a more fundamental democratic ideal than reactionary social engineering that hurts everyone. I doubt it will happen, but we can all have hope.
