We usually wait until the Patch Tuesday updates come out before deploying out of band updates like those that came out on 9/20. I combined the 9/20 updates with the full Quality Rollup in one deployment and all updates failed with error 0x87D0070C, which is basically a timeout. UpdatesHandler log showed "Automatic Updates is currently busy, failing job".
I'm in the middle of trying different scenarios but so far installing the 9/20 updates by themselves was successful. More to come... -Russell
