[MSX] ObsoNET: First speed test
I have performed a simple transmission speed test with the provisional BIOS of ObsoNET. The test consisted on sending one 1KByte long packet, 1 times on a loop, and measuring with the MSX timer how many time the operation took. These are the results: On R800: 31 seconds, so about 320 KByte/second. On Z80: 118 seconds, so about 85 KByte/second. Of course the real performance will be smaller since on real applications more code will be involved, especially when using TCP/IP. But this can serve as an indication of the absoulte maximum transmission speed achievable. *** XXVI MSX USERS MEETING IN BARCELONA: OCTOBER 31th 2004 *** - Konami Man - AKA Nestor Soriano (^^)v http://www.konamiman.com- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ#: 18281450 Be conservative in what you send and liberal in what you receive - ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx

GUI test
Hi, There is a thing I want MSXers opinion to decide if I should continue this work or not. At http://uzix.sf.net/test/xuzix.zip there is a diskimage of UZIX 0.2.1 with the first version of my GUI for UZIX. To run it, just type xwind at the shell prompt. You must have a MSX mouse to operate it. Do not test it under emulators. This version has some minor bugs, but it isn't worth fixing them now. Characteristics: - 512x212 graphical environment (SCREEN6); - mouse support; - intensive use of VDP hardware commands; - small font, allowing 128x35 terminals; Limitations: - 4 colors (SCREEN6); - only one application available (XTerm); - fixed terminals window position; - small font, unreadable with TV; - no decorations; I would really like to hear about this from you, MSX users. This GUI uses SCR6, VDP hardware commands and simple style to achieve better performance. But I'm not sure about practical use of it. Hi Adriano, a GUI on MSX, thats real worthwhile! So i downloaded the dsk, created a floppy, booted it on my 8280 with a 4Mb mapper. All fine, logged in, looked around. And truly Unix. Ok, lets turn to the mighte Turbo R (an ST) and boot it there. started xwind and was again told to buy a real MSX! Next i started NLMSX and was shown the GUI :) not that it was useful, NL MSX does not support a mouse, but i did see a mouse pointer. MSX-AUDIO Test register experiments
Hello all. Last weekend I wrote a short BASIC program to examine the effects of the bits in the TEST register in Y8950 MSX-AUDIO at location $01. Here are the preliminary results: Y8950 MSX-AUDIO Test register $01 (write only) Bit Description 7 Reset LFOs - seems to force the LFOs to their initial values (eg. maximum amplitude, zero phase deviation) 6 something to do with ADPCM - bit 0 of the status register is affected by setting this bit (PCM BSY) 5 No effect? - Waveform select enable in YM3812 OPL2 so seems reasonable that this bit wouldn't have been used in OPL 4 No effect? 3 Faster LFOs - increases the frequencies of the LFOs and (maybe) the timers (cf. YM2151 test register) 2 Reset phase generators - No phase generator output, but envelope generators still work (can hear a transient when they are gated) 1 No effect? 0 Reset envelopes - Envelope generator outputs forced to maximum, so all enabled voices sound at maximum I will supplement this experiment with results from YM3526 OPL itself (on a Commodore 64) and YM3812 OPL2. Novaxis test
Hi, I'm looking for someone who has a Novaxis interface to do a little test for me. The test is just executing a program and sending me the results. Oh, and the user must have patience, because I'll insist in new tests until everything goes fine. :) Interested? Great. Download: http://www.adrpage.cjb.net/Testnov.bas http://www.adrpage.cjb.net/Testnov.bin Copy these files to a MSX disk and run it with your Novaxis. It should: find your Novaxis, ask the ID of a valid device (use your HD or ZIP, not a CDROM or Novaxis itself!), ask if you want to read the physical sector 0 of device (see next paragraph), ask a partition (absolute) number (it will show the primary/extended partition numbers - please, check its correctness!), present the given partition start and size (in sectors), ask a sector number in this partition and presents the contents of the sector. The contents of the sector must be what you expected (use any tool to read this sector (Compass?) from a drive that has the partition selected and compare them). For first test, answer Y to the question about reading the physical sector 0 of device. It should not fail. After the dump of sector contents, press any key to finish the program and do a BSAVENOVSEC0.BIN,HB100,HB2FF and send it to me, please. About partition numbers: I can't guarantee that it will work. The routine works for standard partition formats (and I know that Novaxis can use three different types of partition table), and I think it will work for Extended type. If you have an Old MSX or Old PC partition table, dump it (reading physical sector 0 and bsaving it) and send it to me, please. If the program fails in any part, please report where, what you typed, what was presented and the error code (if available). Could somebody tell me wath is so special about this test-program Wat extra's does it have in comparison to other z80 validators ? Well, it's very hard to get it working :) The algorithm is a CRC on almost all Z80 opcodes, for a lot (and I mean A LOT) of random-generated input data. It takes many minutes to run it entirely (IIRC, some hours on a standard Z80 @ 3.57 MHz). And were can I download it ? Anyway, the filters have been installed manually by an admin from Stack, because the config update feature refused to work. The filters seem to be working, so you shouldn't receive any more HYBRIS trojans through the MSX mailing list. You received an "undisclosed-recipients bouncing doesn't work" message, but that was an error from my side, the filter is set to bounce "undisclosed-recipients:", so with a colon as the final character. I corrected the test and sent it again and this time it worked. And finally, I want to wish all of you a happy 2001! Bye, Maarten -- For info, see http://www.stack.nl/~wynke/MSX/listinfo.html

Hi, Sorry for the test mails, they were sent too soon. I queued them in my mail client until I needed them, but I didn't know this mail client sends all queued mail when I click the send button on a reply. For some reason the mailinglist server isn't accepting the new configuration file. It doesn't reply at all: no error message and no confirmation. I'll have to get outside assistance again. Still no good crack of Penguin Adventure! (and: test!)
Hi I still don't have a good crack of Penguin Adventure that runs in DOS2. I also still have no good crack of Firebird, that runs without slow-downs. Can anyone get me those? 512kB RAM demand is no problem. This mail is also a test if it is posted to the newsgroup... :-) By the way, I do have a nice Space Manbow crack now. It runs on 128k (without sound), 256k (with loading) and 512k (no loading!). I adapted the loader so that it works with SCC in any slot (with Jasper Lautenbags cool routine ofcourse!). I will put it online a.s.a.p. Grtjs, Manuel ((m)ICQ UIN 41947405) PS: MSX 4 EVER! (Questions? See: http://www.faq.msxnet.org/) PPS: Visit my home page at http://bilderbeek.tsx.org/ MSX Mailinglist. In comp.sys.msx you write: Hi I still don't have a good crack of Penguin Adventure that runs in DOS2. I also still have no good crack of Firebird, that runs without slow-downs. Can anyone get me those? 512kB RAM demand is no problem. Hoi Manuel, Ik heb een 256k versie van Firebird, die niet vertraagt en die werkt onder DOS2. Ik kan hem naar je toe mailen. Laat maar effe weten of niemand anders me voor is geweest ;-) Groetjes, Alex -- Alex Wulms/XelaSoft - MSX of anders NIX - Linux 4 ever See my homepage for info on the *** XSA *** format http://www.inter.nl.net/users/A.P.Wulms MSX Mailinglist.
