I note that MultiSync lists support for sync4j, however I am having trouble making it
work. In particular, when I attempt to sync another source with sync4j, a 500 is
returned on the HTTP request and sync4j's log shows:

Thank you for the report. I'll have a look at it after the weekend. It
seems like libxml somehow reports too much white space, which is
interpreted as (unknown) commands.

(http://sync4j.sourceforge.net)? I have it working with a PalmPilot
client, but Multisync fails - it appears to send a broken packet back to
the Sync4j server after the first response from the server. Message dump
follows.
Any pointers
