Re: [music-dsp] Combining ADCs/DACs to increase bit depth?
There are some popular examples: Yamaha DX-7 Here, the reference voltage of a 12 bit DAC is tied to an R2R network with seven voltages, that are 2^n apart. This way, they achieved 19 bits resolution, but linearity was crazy off, although it contributed largely to the sound. Roland D-50. Here, a Burr Brown PCM56 was extended by a 4 bit DAC to achieve 20 bits. But somehow, only the reverb section used the additional bits. On the ADC side, there's Stagetec, who makes an 28bit Interface by combining the reading of 3 ADCs with different preamp gains. They licensed it to Neumann, they use it in their D-series microphones. Right, and I wouldn't hold my breath about the compensating the analogs in the digital domain, unless one clearly knows what one is doing. The trend with increasing capacity of the electronics of course is to go better linear, higher Sampling Frequency, more bits, better balancing, less disturbance sensitivity, lower price per convertor, etc. In fact, that trend was already there in the80s: my second DX-product, essentially a DX7-II rack with individual generatorpair outputs, the TX802, had 16 bit Burr Brown convertors per output, and it still sounded DX-7 like, but with less noise, and it was interesting to take apart!
