Research on bell tones reveals that energy passes between the various modes of vibration. As a result some partials increase in amplitude while others decrease. Some references to these studies are:   Aldoshina, I., Pychkov, S., Matcievski, I., Nicanorov, A., Tovstik, P. and Cherniav, S. (2003).
