Re: [Mutopia-discuss] Peter Pan incidental music

Hi Joel,As Knute points out, for syntax questions and special effects with
LilyPond, the LP mailing list will offer you the best and deeper pool of
knowledge.I offer my help looking at your code and making suggestions to
facilitate later publishing in Mutopia.  These would be in the area of file
structure, and if you wish to invest time in doing covers, TOC's, etc.MIDI
optimization can be a low return-on-time-investment proposition.  There's some
things I do invest time to correct on my MIDI's (mostly to quell my OCD)...like
hidden tags to adjust volume, change tempos, but reality is LilyPond MIDI
encoder still has lots of systemic shortcomings that preclude a quality
rendering possible with other tools. Javier ruiz-almajav...@ruiz-alma.com

Returning to this at long last…

While I do still intend to contribute a version of this effort to
Mutopia, I’m finding it easier to work on it as an independent project;
see <https://github.com/jcsalomon/ CrookJ-PeterPan>.

In the Releases page for that project, I have my current drafts of the
first 13 scores in this collection: LilyPond source, PDF score, and MIDI
rendering.

I can use some help with this from folks who are more familiar with
LilyPond or musical notation than I.  There are minor details (which
relative key is correct for any given score, whether any particular slur
should be a phrasing slur instead), more noticeable formatting issues
(how to program the accelerando/ritardando in PP04 “The Shadow Dance”,
or the change of singer in PP13 “The Building of the House”), and
LilyPond issues (are my score blocks overly complicated, or am I perhaps
missing some things that should be there? can I combine articulate.ly
with \acciaccatura? how do I make fermata sound better?).

The response came today:
 Dear Joel

Thank you for your enquiry and your courtesy in contacting us.

I am happy to confirm that GOSH does not have any rights in John
Crook's music, which did not belong to Barrie neither, so the music
would not have been part of the gift of the copyright to the work.

Since Crook died in 1922, his work would be out of copyright in the EU
and probably in the rest of the world as well.

 With best wishes

With that confirmation, I would ask that people take a look at what
I've uploaded to
https://github.com/jcsalomon/MutopiaProject/tree/peterpan/ftp/CrookJ/PeterPan
and comment on the Lilypond coding style.

Re: [Mutopia-discuss] Peter Pan incidental music

2014-12-26 Thread Glen Larsen
Taking a look at the title page on google books I would say that the source
field in the header should read:

source = Price Reynolds, 41, Berners Street W, London

This, along with the publication date, provide a clear statement of what
you used as a base for this transcription.

You may want to use the phrase, The Music to J. M. Barrie’s Successful
... as a subtitle, depending on how busy you want the top of the page to
look.

Regarding a new style called incidental: as you observed it is not a
style so much as it is an explanation for its purpose or, possibly, its
brevity. I think study or overture would fall into the same category.
In this collection, there is a music for The Pirates Depart which would
be a fair result when searching for a march so I'm leaning towards
selecting from existing styles.

This is a good place for that discussion but you could also add it as an
issue in github if you feel strongly about it.

The text of the law, quoted at

it would not apply to the music detached from a performance of the story.

But there's no need to play lawyer about this: J. M. Barrie gifted the
copyright to Peter Pan to the GOSH, but the copyright to the music was
never his to give away. The copyright page on the PDF reads,
COPYRIGHT, MCMV FOR ALL COUNTRIES BY PRICE REYNOLDS., Price
Reynolds being the publishers of the song book; and what rights the
publishers didn't own would have been Crook's -- or possibly the Duke of
York's Theatre's. In any case, this would never have been included in
 Barrie's gift.
