Is there a hook in mutt which runs when new messages arrive in a
mailbox? If not, then I don't think we could make this function run as
it is now.

Depends on your use case. I'm using this patch and for me it's good
enough to get rid of these messages upon opening my inbox. My mutt
sessions are rather short lived, though.

Right now the command is bound to a key, so it's not automatic. Adding
it to a hook is purely optional.

That sounds like a good idea. Would you use these patterns to tag
messages automatically? Would the patterns be applied when new
messages arrive?
