Mixing maildir and mbox

This follows on from my recent question about mutt not recognising new mail which turned out to be due to the 'noatime' setting on the disk drives in question. I can solve the problem by switching to maildir, however I'd prefer not to keep my saved/archived mail in maildir format, is it possible
