*sigh* Never mind, something is not communicating well. After flailing around for a while with gpgsm and associated tools, I found that the problem is either that an intermediate certificate is revoked or dirmngr is confused. I temporarily disabled CRL checking and now mutt is happy to sign with my X.509 key.
