mutt doesn't talk to an MTA at all. It runs "/usr/lib/sendmail -t -ba"
(or an equivalent), and feeds it the complete message (header and body)

i recently upgraded from mutt 1.0pre* to 1.2.5, and now my From address is
always rewritten from "foo@bar (Foo Bar)" to "Foo Bar " (whether i set
