Sorry, I have no specific advice -- I got my xterm set up years ago and haven't touched the settings in a long time.
I can recommend rxvt-unicode, which is basically xterm on steroids with a lot of useful extensions, such as allowing me to open URLs with the keyboard (ctrl-enter and ctrl-shift-enter), interactive clipboard/selection (ctrl-rightclick) manipulation, termshots (PrintScr), searching (alt-ctrl-s), and more.
