Oddity using Maildir

I am using mutt with Maildir, it appears not to be able to find its Maildir 'mailboxes' properly. I have a Maildir called 'purchases' for example. If when reading new incoming mail (which works fine, mail in $HOME/Maildir) I hit 'c' to change mailbox and then enter 'purchases' I get the message
