the start date change from # of days to and actual date at some point and
I'd like to keep it always showing as a number of days since the start
date. Is this possible?

The documentation of the available formats can be found in the users manual
starting at the bottom of page 117. Check out the formats “r” or “R” (for
Relative). The rules for switching format
