It is like other editors, where you have a new document in memory and you
can edit it and then save to a file if you want, or close without saving.
Ever do that in windows notepad? It's pretty normal for that era of
software.

Drag and drop from outlook with a link back to email was working fine, even
once I had moved said email into the archive.
