I do something similar but a different approach. I assign a context (.Gcal)
only to the items I want to sync and then everything else is excluded. It
allows me to be more selective about which tasks sync. You can assign this
to top level parents and allow sub tasks to inherit it and it works.

I use a "Reminder" context to indicate zero-duration tasks that I use as
reminders, like "remember to take vitamins" or "take out trash".
I have Google Calendar sync setup, and I'd like to exclude those tasks that
have that specific context from Google
