I downloaded this for Ubuntu and installed (after installing libzip1
which was required BTW)

So, Workbench loads, but I don't see any way to connect to my mySQL
server (I'm not running my DB locally as it has > 1/2 Billion rows).

I did a quick search and found this rather disappointing page:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/workbench/en/wb-connection-wizard.html

And the link below to download is for the FOSS version, but nowhere do I
see a commercial download link?

Crippling the tool in this way seems like a really bad idea. How do I
know if I even want to buy it, if I don't know if it can handle a huge
database properly. There are plenty of "modelers" out there, I've yet to
find a good one however that don't require hours of re-arranging
table-boxes. Wouldn't it be better to cripple by prohibiting "save" or
"export" or something else? Not that I even think you should be
crippling this tool to begin with -- especially for a linux version that
is still Alpha!!

The very robust and powerful http://www.modelright.com/ community
edition would seem to be your closest competitor (unfortunately they are
Windows only).
