Oh dear... strike that... I rsynced a bunch of files over from my previous installation and it seems that I managed to change the ownership of the files from the user. Presumably the error was caused because the user that I was trying to log in as couldn't write to its home directory. A simple:

Just confirming that I also have this problem and that this fix solved it. The line for me is now: start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=lo and started udev-finish) Mythtv-frontend now starts before the backend is ready, but this is fine as the frontend automatically keeps retrying
