[mythtv-users] Thanks to developers, plus a few tips from someone who finally got it working

2005-10-05 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Hi, I've been a regular here for a while now, and I just wanted to thank the developers and contributers (especially Jarod) who have helped me get my Myth system up and running. It's been a difficult road, but I think I've finally got it stable. To anyone out there looking for some quick and dir

Regarding cable types - I wouldn't spend the extra money on Cat 6. Cat 5e should do ya nicely. -Greg If you're just buying a cable at WalMart or Best Buy, I would agree. However, if you're planning on running wire behind the walls, Cat6 in bulk is not that much more expensive than Cat5e. At one

[mythtv-users] How difficult to upgrade video card?

2005-07-29 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Hi, I'm upgrading my frontend's video card from a GeForce Ti4200 to a GeForce FX5200. I'm moving the Ti4200 to the backend (eventually). How hard will it be to upgrade? Will I need any new drivers? It seems that the Nvidia unified driver should handle most of it, right? Please help me enumera

[mythtv-users] [OT] directory structure for myth backend / storage server

2005-07-26 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Hi, I'm putting together a storage server for my house. I'd like to integrate it with the mythbackend, since that seems logical. I would like some advice on how to logically set up the directory structures. I'm not too familiar with the Linux standard directories (like /usr and /etc) and so am a

RE: [mythtv-users] [OT] Diskless front end (using PXE) - Fedora Core?

2005-07-07 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Great! This is pretty much what I was looking for. I agree that it might be difficult to upgrade stuff on the diskless client, but it will still probably be easier than the solutions I proposed. Does anyone know if it's possible to set up a hardware router (Linksys BEFSR41) to interact correctly

[mythtv-users] [OT] Diskless front end (using PXE) - Fedora Core?

2005-07-07 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Hi, I'm getting ready to split my current Myth box (a combined frontend/backend) into two separate machines. As part of the split, I'm planning to move to a diskless front-end configuration where it boots over the network from the server. I've checked in the BIOS and my soon-to-be frontend does

Before everyone else jumps in saying "You shouldn't have given up..." let me just say, I did the same thing and got the same results. I went from an Epia MII-10k to a mATX nForce-3 board w/ a Sempron 2600, and I am much happier as well. Like you said, all the extra horsepower means that XvMC is e

[mythtv-users] PVR-250 is hot! hot! hot!

2005-04-20 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Hi, My Myth box has extremely poor ventilation, and subsequently, runs very hot. I wanted it to be extra quiet, so I shut off all the rear exhaust fans except the PSU fan. The PSU fan is pretty slow; I've reduced fan speed (with a FanMate) for the CPU fan, and I let the GPU (Geforce4 Ti4200) go
