I have found the answer to this after reading the documentation!
Make sure that the host defination includes the following:
check_commandcheck-host-alive
For some reason the sample configs I had based my config on did not have
this config item for hosts.

The trick to a host dependency might be to make a dummy host that is using
the same check

there are 2 directories, archives and rw.
I have copied the netsaint-*.log files over to
/usr/local/nagios/var/archives/ in the nagios-*.log
format. When I run /etc/init.d/nagios start the

I'm still having problems with this. I was able to test it from a
friend's box that did not place a NAT between the two boxes and it
worked fine. Does check_nrpe not support NAT traversal? Surely it does...?
