I am using a USB GSM/UMTS Stick and gsm-utils which contains a gsmsmsd

I do it the "easy" way. I have Nagios send an email to my mobile carrier's
email-to-SMS address. An AT&T you put your *10-digit wireless phone number*,
followed by*@txt.att.net
you can use a smsc gateway like kannel. it's easy and convenience.
