[Nagios-users] Hey I was wondering about the check_ping from the newest stable plugins.

2013-08-09 Thread Eliezer Croitoru
I have compiled all nagios plugins many times but on the last time this
what happens:
nagios-plugins-1.4.16.tar.gz
I compile with no errors and then when nagios do a check it states:
CRITICAL - Network Unreachable (repo.ngtech.co.il)
while from command line linux ping everything works fine!
also I compiled my own script in ruby perl and python and all of them
are not stating anything about Network Unreachable.

Is this a regression from older and newer versions of nagios_plugins??
Since they work at the same time I run my own script and it states the
everyting is OK which means 100% no packet loss I am a bit confused
about it.
How is it possible for the basic check_ping written in c to not work and
the scripting languages scripts to work fine?
it's not permissions since it states Network Unreachable.
it's must be another issue either in nagios or the code somewhere.

Can anyone test it please and make sure that my assumptions are right?

Forgot to show the command:

-c 500.0,60% -p 10
CRITICAL - Network Unreachable (repo.ngtech.co.il)

# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -H www1.ngtech.co.il -w 100.0,20%

Which is odd in any way you can think off.

 My guess would be that your IPv6 connectivity is broken. In that case,
 using check_ping's -4 flag should do the trick. If that _doesn't_
 help, could you please paste the output of check_ping -vvv [...]?

 Can anyone test it please and make sure that my assumptions are right?

 For me, both of the following commands return OK:

 $ check_ping -4 -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w '500.0,10%' -c '1000.0,50%'
 $ check_ping -6 -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w '500.0,10%' -c '1000.0,50%'

Hey Holger,
this is what I do have:
# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -4 -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w
'500.0,10%' -c '1000.0,50%'
PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 339.04

'500.0,10%' -c '1000.0,50%'
CRITICAL - Network Unreachable (repo.ngtech.co.il)

which seems like the settings for the RT of the packets seems to be the
main issue while parsing the ping command output.

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -vvv -4 -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w
'500.0,10%' -c '1000.0,50%'
CMD: /bin/ping -n -U -w 10 -c 5 repo.ngtech.co.il

500.00:10% 1000.00:50%

so the RT is more then 100ms which considered to be C\W but my output is:
# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping -vvv -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w
100.0,20% -c 500.0,60%
CMD: /bin/ping6 -n -U -w 10 -c 5 repo.ngtech.co.il
Got stderr: connect: Network is unreachable
CRITICAL - Network Unreachable (repo.ngtech.co.il)
and:
# /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_ping - -H repo.ngtech.co.il -w
500.0,20% -c 1000.0,60%
CMD: /bin/ping6 -n -U -w 10 -c 5 repo.ngtech.co.il
Got stderr: connect: Network is unreachable
CRITICAL - Network Unreachable (repo.ngtech.co.il)

which is a bit weird why is it using ping6 for a simple ping by default?
Hos is the check_ping recognises that there is a need for ping6 ??
the host dosn't even has ipv6 connectivity..

 Something like..

 sudo /etc/init.d/nagios start

 should do it.

 You'll need to edit /etc/sudoers to allow your non-root user to do this.
 Enter 'man sudoers' to read all the gory detail on how to configure it.
 However...

 If your system is anything like mine (Ubuntu), you'll find you can easily
 give users sudo access to run any command as root by adding them to the
 'admin' group. This is by virtue of this entry in /etc/sudoers:

 # Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
 %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

 Although you might decide this gives them too much power...

 I hope that helps.

Or instead use a specific REJECT rule on specific port that otherwise
will work and test it via a small script that will return if ok or not..
can work like this:
echo server startup on upper ports threaded.
test a client on it.
get result and close both server and client.
can be very simple to do in ruby.

2013-01-14 Thread Eliezer Croitoru
I would try to run a basic script which logs the nrpe environment into a
file.
it will make sure what is available to you and what not.

test if:
there are environment vars..
there is a STDOUT\IN\ERR available etc..

#!/usr/bin/env ruby
f = File.open(/tmp/nrpetest.log,a)
f.sync = true

f.puts ENVIROMENTAR VARS\n===
ENV.each {|k,p| f.puts #{k} = #{p}}

f.puts STD DATA\n==
f.puts stdout exists?: #{$stdout}
if $stdout

f.puts stdout is tty?: #{$stdout.isatty}
begin
   $stdout.write_nonblock 0
   f.puts Wrote 0 to stdout
rescue = e
   f.puts didnt wrote to stdout
   f.puts e.message
   f.puts e.backtrace.inspect
end

end

modify the above to make sure what is the cause of this problem.
you can also try to access stdout\err

Re: [Nagios-users] puzzling no output from nrpe run of check_load

2012-04-30 Thread Eliezer Croitoru
so it seems that the check_load needs shell rights to show any output
what so ever also the --help stuff.
it's kind of understandable.

 Thanks for the suggestion, gave that a try, or more precisely:

 sudo su nagios -c more /proc/loadavg

 after removing the password for user nagios and setting the shell to
 /bin/false.

 This still produces no output.

 Very peculiar. I guess there must be something wrong with the authentication
 or setup on these machines, but can't figure out what is going on here.

 auth.log contains
 Successful su for nagios by root
 right after this so that part seems all right.

 The systems are using ldap pam authentication for other users, though nagios
 and other such system accounts are local in the /etc/passwd and /etc/passwd
 files. The local accounts seem to work fine for this command if they have a
 password and shell is set to /bin/bash, rather than /bin/false.

 cheers,
 Peter

 'su -' makes the shell a login shell ... which requires a real shell, not
 /bin/false.

 What if you do this?

 sudo su nagios more /proc/loadavg

 Skip the -, which should run more directly, which should work even with
 /bin/false listed as the shell.

 If that works, then you should be able to modify your nagios command
 definition the same way ...

Re: [Nagios-users] plugin for checking file permissions

2012-04-05 Thread Eliezer Croitoru
On 04/04/2012 15:54, Christoph Kluenter wrote:
 Hi,

 i tried to search for nagios plugin file permission but obviously got lots
 of
 wrong results :)

 I need a plugin that ensures that files in a given directory all belong to
 one user/group.
 Has anybody here ever seen a script for this purpose ?

do you have any specific about one directory? or a recursive lookup?
if you will use the commands:
ls -l| awk '{ print $3 }'
ls -l| awk '{ print $4 }'

will give you the owner(3) and the group (4) of all files in a directory.
also you can use the stat command on specific file:
stat -c %U /full_file/path
stat -c %G /full_file/path

so you can try to do a for or while loop on all the results and in a
case you find different owner then expected change a variable.
you can also use a xargs with a nested if that will make sure that $1
is the same as you want to check.
pretty simple to write cause it's a either every file is owned by the
same owner or not so it's OK or CRITICAL.

in case you need more help i will have sometime next week.

Regards,
Eliezer

 Cheers,
christoph

out of curiosity, what hyper-visor you are using for these VMs?
i'm building nagios lab on VM right now.
