I'm seeing those types of numbers too on virtual systems, so keep in mind if
you are still using bare metal servers your numbers might be different too, I
haven't had any bare metal for awhile to do any testing with.

700%, in terms of the number of jobs it can spawn, according to a
volunteer tester who reported in a few days ago.

It's actually a bit inaccurate to talk about percentages, since
most algorithms used in Nagios 4 are several orders of magnitude
faster than the ones in Nagios 3, and that means they'll scale a
lot better, but for very small installations you won't notice
much difference except a slightly lower load.

Nagios 4 has improved performance by a factor of 7, as well as much
better interfaces for extending it further in the future.

Nagios 3.5 is mainly 3.4 with bugfixes, although one such bugfix caused
some internal API's to be changed incompatibly, so we had to bump the
minor number for it.

Hi i have tested this 3 time on my test server and it worked perfectly well
for me, meaning

first installed with RPM and nagios got stored in non-standard locations,
then upgraded the nagios using the above ./configure script.

I am just making it sure if anyone has done it in a similar way. Just a
final confirmation .

Thanks

It might be a little more work now, but my advice is do a standard
Nagios 3 install (mostly it goes under /usr/local/nagios) then copy
your Nagios 2 configs in to it.

Running Nagios in the non-standard locations used in some rpms and
other repositiories can make installing various add-ons for Nagios a
real head-ache.

You may need to be a bit careful about how the Nagios install updates
anything which is likely to be common to both, for example the apache
configs and /etc/init.d scripts. (take a good backup).

When I recently upgraded from 2.6 to 3, I installed 3 on a new server
altogether and migrated the monitoring over bit by bit. It took a
while, but I wanted to make sure I undid all the mistakes I'd made
when I was learning Nagios on 2.6 (yes I had installed from rpms too).

hth,

Jim

[Nagios-users] nagios upgrade

2009-04-22 Thread Anirudh Srinivasan
Hi Folks,
The previous guy installed nagios using nagios-2.9 RPM and right now i am
handling the nagios .The following was the nagios directory structure:

configuration file /etc/nagios
nagios binary /usr/bin/nagios
log files /var/log/nagios
externel command directory /var/log/nagios/rw
html files /usr/share/nagios
cgi files /usr/lib/nagios/cgi
plugins /usr/lib/nagios/plugins

Now we are going to upgrade the nagios to 3.0.6

so my configure script should be as following right?

./configure --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/lib/nagios/cgi
--libexecdir=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins --datadir=/usr/share/nagios
--sysconfdir=/etc/nagios --localstatedir=/var/log/nagios
--with-command-group=nagiocmd

Is the above thing correct ?? . Please suggest guys. Any thing else to be
added?? or is this correct.

Thank you

Re: [Nagios-users] nagios upgrade

2009-04-09 Thread Randal, Phil
Is there any way you can clone your nagios box to a VM and test on the
cloned box?

I've just done that here testing for a planned 2.12 to 3.0.6 upgrade.

You'll need to edit your nagios.cfg file to remove one obsolete option,
and there are a few new options to merge in from the example nagios.cfg.

I tested the worst-possible migration case - from self-compiled 2.12 to
RPMForge-packaged 3.0.6 RPM.

It was fun dealing with all the default directory changes, but not
impossible.

If you're compiling from source for both versions it should be a fairly
painless migration.

The side.html file is, as far as I remember, the same in both versions,
so I think you can keep your old one and copy over the newly installed
3.0.6 version.

My word, of course, is not gospel (and rarely is), so I'd advise you to
test, test, and test again if you can.

The directories which change depend on your config - a look at the paths
specified in your nagios.cfg etc will point yopu in the right direction.
(your logs might be in /var/log/nagios/, for example).

Cheers,

Phil

Hi I was planning to upgrade nagios from 2.9 to 3.0.6. We already have
the pnp tool (performance graph at the side bar).
My first question , while upgrading will the pnp tool get affected or
messed up by any chance?
I just want to be careful enough because nagios is one of our heavely
used application.

As a backup plan already the complete nagios is being backed up by the
cron job.
My second question :
Can i know which directory is the one that is dynamic meaning that keeps
on changing day by day. Let me list some of them here as far as i know:

1)nagios/etc
2)nagios/var

If there is any can you please list them

Without the context of the error message above, I'd hazard the guess
that you've decided to specify nrpe.cfg as a cfg_file (or as part of a
cfg_dir) in nagios.cfg as if it were a _nagios_ config file. It is not.

And line 19 of my nrpe.cfg is:

> pid_file=/var/run/nrpe.pid

I tried change the directory to /var/run/nagios/nrpe.pid and then chowning the
new directory to nagios:nagios but it is
giving me the same error.

Any ideas?

Thanks for posting this Hugo.

Has Dag fixed this yet? I was about to update some documentation I have
hosted on the CentOS and Nagios sites, but wanted to confirm this
problem still exists before I proceed with mentioning these issues.

I looked on Dag's site and the release is still from December 12th, so
I'm assuming not.

Thanks,
Max

[Nagios-users] Nagios upgrade to 2.6 bumps using RPMs

2006-12-12 Thread Hugo van der Kooij
Hi,

Just some notes before anyones picks up the nagios 2.6 RPM from DAG. Make
sure to backup the config directory (as always).

Just got the upgrade. But I lost some files in the upgrade and had to
restore them from backup.

In /etc/nagios the files checkcommands.cfg and misccommands.cfg are
deleted and replaced by an incompatible file called command-plugins.cfg
which is not even in the proper format for Nagios:

#Note: Use the convertcfg program in the contrib directory of the Nagios
# distribution to convert this file into a object file format.

for misccommands.cfg there also was a *.rpmsave version but the other one
was just gone.

There is also a bug in 1 of the nagios-plugins for which the following
tiny diff file is the answer:

--- check_linux_raid.pl.SHIPPED 2006-12-13 07:47:01.0 +0100
+++ check_linux_raid.pl 2006-12-13 07:47:40.0 +0100
@@ -23,7 +23,7 @@
  #WARNING md0 status=[UUU_U], recovery=46.4%, finish=123.0min

  use strict;
-use lib utils.pm;
+#use lib utils.pm;
  use utils qw(%ERRORS);

  # die with an error if we're not on Linux

This is also reported to the packager.

Hugo.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios upgrade from 1.x to 2, 5 - how to keep status and retention data?

2006-09-19 Thread rob . moss
Status and retention data is transient, it's only useful if you're
restarting a large install..

I would wipe it but keep it enabled in Nagios 2.x for future restarts.

Is there any utility to convert status data and retention data from 1.x
format or 2.x format?

Or do you choose to lose the data when upgrade?

[Nagios-users] Nagios Upgrade to 1.x to 2.x

2006-06-02 Thread Adam Sellhorn

I've been planning on an upgrade from nagios 1.4 to 2.4 but my biggest
concern is the use of hostgroups in escalations. I am monitoring close to
600 hosts and 1697 services so typing these in individually would be a
nightmare. Is it even work upgrading to 2.x? Does anyone have any advice to
make this an easier upgrade?

Any help would be appreciated.
