For that, as Seth said, use iaxmodem. And use hylafax to feed iaxmodem.

and asterisk has worked well for mulaw faxing, provided
a low-jitter path to the pstn provider, but lately I've been using the
above path.
Of course that is probably only one fax every few months.

I know that voip.ms has sip/rtp nodes in Chicago.
I don't know what the next hop is (whether is is tdm or something like
sip/rtp orver a dedicated ethernet to a clec or an ixc or what), but I
find the latency minimal.

the query ignore rows which are older than some given time.
And with postfix, using its sql proxy capability, using a sql backend is
fully performant.
