SHUSWAP ELDER TRANSFERRED - PAROLE HEARING DECEMBER 15TH, SUPPORT LETTERS
NEEDED

Wolverine, aka William Jones Ignace, the 67 year old Shuswap traditionalist
elder sentenced to 8 1/2 years imprisonment for his stand on behalf of
sovereignty during the 1995 Gustafsen Lake standoff, has been transferred
from BC's maximum security Matsqui prison to the Elbow Lake Institution.
The transfer to Elbow Lake, a "less secure" camp setting, is thought to
represent a concession by the authorities to increasing international and
domestic pressure for Wolverine's release, and a full public inquiry into
highly questionable actions by the federal and provincial governments,
police and military during the largest paramilitary operation of its kind
in Canadian history. (See
http://kafka.uvic.ca/~vipirg/SISIS/gustmain.html )

In addition, Wolverine has been scheduled to go before a BC Parole Board
hearing on *December 15th*. We realize this is last-minute notice, but
please do take the time to fax your support letters in support of the
release of this courageous Shuswap elder. Should the Parole Board refuse
parole at this hearing, your letters will be resubmitted to subsequent
hearings.

Osiyo Ish,

Here is the latest information on American Rock Salt digging a Salt Mine on
an ancient burial ground. It can be found on the following web page at
least for today 12/15/1998.

http://rochestertoday.com/news.html

Last Updated: 12/14/98 6:37 p.m.

Skull Fragments Found On Rock Salt Mine

A skull fragment believed to be thousands of years old has
been unearthed at the site of the new mine at Hampton's
Corners in Livingston County.

Work in the area where the skull fragments were found has
been stopped and the location will be preserved until more
tests are done. The pieces of skull are being studied at the
Rochester Museum and Science Center.

The discovery was made on November 24th when archeological crews were
digging on the sight as part of the American Rock Salt permit process. The
bone fragments of the skull are the size of a thumbnail. They are believed
to be
6,000 years old, predating the Senecas, the last tribe to occupy the sight
in the
1800's.

Those opposed to the new mine said the discovery is proof
that the project is disturbing an ancient Indian burial ground.
Melissa Jacobs asked, "How important is it where your
ancestors rest?"

It will now be up to the Seneca tribe when
work can continue in the area. The Seneca's have jurisdiction
over any Indian remains that are found.

"We're doing everything we can to preserve the site," said
Larry Milliken of the American Rock Salt Company.
...

They discovered the remains two weeks ago but remained quiet about their
findings. Meanwhile the bull dozers, road graders, and power shovels have
been flatening the burial mounds all around the area of a fire pit where
the remains were found.

One of the permits to dig in that area requires an archeological study to
be conducted before work begins but as you can see from the news article
the study is going on while the digging is in progress.

R.A.G.E. (The Regional Action Group for the Environment) has a law suit
filed to prevent American Rock Salt from digging in that area. It appears
that American Rock Salt has also ignored the pending litigation.

Melissa has said that skeletal remains were found in the area in the 1920s
and also an American Indian Skeleton was found in the 1960s. The remains of
the 1960's skeleton are believed to be stored in a drawer at the State
University of New York in Geneseo.

Melissa is not against the mining operation, She is only against the mine's
location.

We will try and get some addresses to you soon where to write letters of
protest.

Wado

Nobel Winner's Story Challenged

.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- A new book by an American anthropologist claims key details
of an autobiography written by Rigoberta Menchu, the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize
winner, are untrue, The New York Times reported today.

``I, Rigoberta Menchu,'' first published in 1983, describes the author's
painful history growing up as an uneducated and oppressed member of the
Quiche
people in Guatemala.

Ms. Menchu became an internationally acclaimed spokeswoman for the rights of
indigenous peoples, based largely on the best-selling account.

But anthropologist David Stoll concludes that Ms. Menchu's book ``cannot be
the eyewitness account it purports to be'' because she repeatedly describes
``experiences she never had herself.''

Stoll's book, ``Rigoberta Menchu and the Story of All Poor Guatemalans,'' is
based on archival research and nearly a decade of interviews with more than
120 people, the newspaper said.

In September, Ms. Menchu refused to address Stoll's criticisms, dismissing
them as part of a racist political agenda intended to gain publicity.

A reporter from the Times, using contacts provided by Stoll as well as others
found independently, also conducted interviews in Guatemala that contradicted
Ms. Menchu's account, the newspaper said.

Some of Ms. Menchu's relatives, neighbors, friends and former classmates said
main episodes of her book had been fabricated or exaggerated.

A land dispute, central to the book, was a family quarrel, they said, not a
fight against rich landowners of European descent. A younger brother who Ms.
Menchu said starved to death never existed, they said. And Ms. Menchu, who
claimed she never went to school, attended two private boarding schools on
scholarships, they said.

Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told the Times
that
he was aware of Stoll's work, but ``there is no question of revoking the
prize.'' He said the award was not based exclusively on the book.

NATIVE_NEWS: Statue of Washakie - Shoshone Chief

1998-12-15 Thread Sonja Keohane

Washakie statue funds to be requested by Geringer

RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - The Legislature should provide funding to help place
a statue of Chief Washakie in the U.S. and Wyoming capitol buildings,
according to Gov. Jim Geringer.

Geringer said he will recommend that a planning committee receive up to
$250,000 for the project, providing the private sector put up matching
funds.

Earlier this year, the Legislature approved a law which names the Shoshone
chief as the second Wyoming figure to be depicted by a statue in the U.S.
Capitol.

Each state is allowed two figures in the Capitol. Wyoming is one of four
states which have only one statue. The state's figure depicts Esther Hobart
Morris, who was known for her work promoting women's suffrage during
Wyoming's territorial days.

The governor and the committee plan to have the Chief Washakie sculpture
completed by the end of the century, according to Sharon Kahin of Dubois,
chairwoman of the Chief Washakie sculpture committee.

"This is an ambitious timetable, but it is appropriate in that Chief
Washakie lived in three centuries," said Kahin.

The chief was born in the last days of the 18th Century and died in the
first days of the 20th Century.

Members of Chief Washakie's descendants will serve on the committee, which
will be assisted by Wyoming Arts Council director John Coe.

Other members of the committee are Alan Hirschfield of Wilson; Rep. Ray
Harrison, R-Worland, who sponsored the legislation designating Washakie;
Sen. Bob Peck, R-Riverton; Sarah Boehme, curator of the Whitney Gallery in
Cody; May Raynolds, Lander; Pat Bergie, Shoshone planning department and
Wyoming Arts Council; B.J. Durr, artist and member of the arts council
board; Zedora Enos, Wyoming Independent Living minority affairs
coordinator, Fort Washakie; and John Washakie and Ivan Posey, members of
the Shoshone Business Council.

NATIVE_NEWS: Many Indian languages face extinction in Canada

Many Indian languages face extinction in Canada

OTTAWA, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Canada's Indians are losing their native tongues
as many of their languages are swallowed up by English and French, a study
reported on Monday.

Only three of 50 aboriginal languages -- Cree, Inuktitut and Ojibway -- had
large enough populations in 1996 to be considered truly secure from the
threat of extinction in the long run, Statistics Canada, the government
statistics agency, said in its report.

``I view it as a sign of loss of culture, and it's also a sign of the
assimilation process we were subjected to,'' Maryjane Jim, a vice-chief in
the Assembly of First Nations, the largest aboriginal grouping in Canada,
told Reuters.

Statistics Canada said 10 aboriginal languages became extinct in the last
century and at least a dozen were on the brink.

Among Canada's 30 million people, only 800,000 claim an aboriginal
identity. Just 26 percent of them said an aboriginal language was their
mother tongue. Even fewer spoke it at home.

A large base of speakers is among the key to viability. Cree, Inuktitut and
Ojibway all have 20,000 native speakers, while endangered languages rarely
have more than a few thousand and often only a few hundred, the agency said.

Maryjane Jim, speaking by telephone from the Yukon Territory, which adjoins
Alaska, said many aboriginal groups in the Yukon were trying to reestablish
their language.

Part of that involves writing the language for the first time, and
establishing language classes in the school system.

``The numbers are continuing to decline, but I think that the more that we
recognize in the territory that the numbers are continuing to decline the
more effort and emphasis is put on the preservation of the language,'' she
said.

``In some cases it's been absolutely too late.''

Dear Friends:
First of all I wish to thank everyone for a wonderful year with
Bucket-Line we
have had a great time helping others. Donations of clothing are up
substantially but food and fire wood donations are lacking.
I am at a big crossroads as where to go with the work I have started. As it
has out grown just me. Without your help, the community, it will just be a
little harder.
I am not quitting or giving up on the work. I need your help it is
imperative that we raise several thousand dollars to finish the legal work! I
have been able to do the basic leg work like the incorporation of the charity
but now the time has arrived to get the federal paper work done; such as
doing
a Federal 501(c) (3) federal IRS tax exemption filed: the scope is beyond me.
Bucket-Line also is in need a board of directors that should be professional
people like a Lawyer, a DR and an Accountant or business professionals. If
you
are in this line of work I would be glad to talk with you. This is necessary
to keep all the legal work and business dealing of Bucket Line in line with
other charitable organizations.
In order for us to continue with my goals in the next year our budget will
reach around $10,000. This may seem like a lot but when you look at the
expenses of starting and operating an organization such as we have, it is not
so much.
   Here are the following things we need;
Telephone services and online services run around ...$200 month = $2400 yr.
Transportation, hotel, food, and fuel per delivery to reservation = $400 per
trip x 2=$800
These things I have paid for myself this year;
Repairs purchase of office equipment 'I.e.,' computer, printer, scanner
have
cost over $2,000.
Each refill of ink for printer runs $50
Printer paper= $30 per yr.
Tires for truck have cost $600 + fuel for trips
10,000 miles travel to talk to potential contribuitors= around $3,000 The
office equipment is bought and paid for now
Any amount you send will help greatly toward reaching our goals no matter how
small or how large.
I have spent all I have extra or saved to get this going now I ask for you
help
We are in desperate need of food, we need house repairs supplies
(winterizing), fire wood desperately needed for elders.
I hate to come right out and say the greatest need at this point is money to
keep running but it has came to that.
Many of these goals will reach out into each years operation.
I have several companies that have said they will support my work once all
the
Legal work has been finished. So that their donations will be tax exempt.
Merry Christmas to all of you and may you have the Merriest of New Years
heres hoping our Next year will be our best yet
Love and Friendship
