New Products

September was again a busy month for the product review staff.
Over 30 new listings have been added to our New Products page at
http://www.fourwinds-trading.com/new.cfm.

These new listings include 10 traditional and/or pow wow
recordings, and a number of new contemporary recordings including
"One Nation" by Brulé "Colors of My Heart" by Sharon Burch, and
"Taos Tales" by Robert Mirabal to name a few. We have also added
some great new books such as "Prison Writings: My Life is My Sun
Dance" by Leonard Peltier and "Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500
Years" by Bill Bigelow. Finally, we have added several large
format hardcover books that are ideal as Holiday gifts.

Pow Wow Calendar

If you are interested in finding information about the next Pow Wow
to be held in your area please check our Pow Wow calendar at
http://www.fourwinds-trading.com/news/powwowmain.cfm. This
section of our site has become a very popular service and is
visited frequently. We acknowledge Ms. Liz Campbell whose book 1999
Pow Wow Calendar provided source information for some of our
listings. This book is available for purchase through our
catalog.

If you are aware of any Pow Wows that are not listed in our
calendar, please take advantage of the online submission form
available through the Pow Wow Calendar page. We normally review
new submissions and post them on our calendar within 24 hours.

Featured Artist

This month rather than feature a specific artist we would like to
call your attention to the many talented artists who have been
nominated for one of the Native American Music Awards. You may
find a list of these nominations by visiting the Native American
Music Awards web site at http://www.nativeamericanmusic.com. By
clicking on the word vote, a page listing all of the nominations
will be displayed.

We are pleased to announce that our label, "Red Feather Music" has
nominations in four categories. Jerry Alfred who's latest
recording "Kehlonn" is on the Red Feather label has been nominated
for both Artist of the Year and Best Male Artist. "Weaving the
Strands" which is a wonderful compilation of songs and music by
contemporary Native American women has been nominated for Best
Compilation and "Rain Songs" by Alph Secakuku has been nominated as
Best Traditional Recording. You may listen to a sampler from
"Weaving the Strands" by visiting our web site
http://www.fourwinds-trading.com/product.cfm?ID=546. Then click on
the Real Audio icon. If you do vote we would love to have your
support for our Artists.

The Native American Rights Fund (NARF)

The information contained in this section was provided by NARF for
inclusion in our monthly newsletter. For more information about
NARF, and the issues with which it is actively involved you may
visit their web site at http://www.narf.org/.

** Jicarilla Apache Education

NARF recently started working with the Jicarilla Apache Tribe in
New Mexico on the development of an education code for their
reservation schools. The Jicarilla Apache children consistently
rank last or near last in all education categories reported on
annually by the State of New Mexico.

** Tuolomne Me-Wuk Cultural Property Rights

NARF represents the Tuolomne Me-Wuk Band in California and is
providing the Tribe with legal advice on their rights to regulate
cultural and intellectual property. The Tribe is particularly
concerned when non-tribal members misuse and misappropriate, of its
traditional songs, symbols, ceremonies, and arts and crafts.

Events

For our California readers the following is an event that we
thought you might find of interest:
5th Annual California Indian Storytelling Symposium and Festival.

"Returning to Ohlone College for a second year, the California
Indian Storytelling Symposium and Festival will welcome Native
California Indian storytellers from tribes throughout the state.
Elders and other cultural tradition bearers, representatives from
the rich diversity of California tribal traditions, will share
their stories and songs in a celebration of Native life, history
and contemporary experience at this event for all people -- Indian
and non-Indian."

For more information you may visit their web site at
http://www.cistory.org/festival

Finally, I would like to close this newsletter with a thank you for
all the beautiful comments that many of you have added to our
guestbook. Also, I would like to acknowledge the numerous e-mails
that we receive. Although we do our best to respond, sometimes it
is difficult to keep up with all of wonderful and interesting
messages that we receive.
