MEMBERS OF STATE'S TRIBES SHARE VISIONS OF FUTURE

For many American Indians the coming millennium will provide an opportunity to fulfill
dreams swept away in the 20th century. These are the dreams of Nebraska's Sac and Fox,
Ioway, Winnebago, Omaha, Santee and Ponca nations.

Members of these tribes show their disappointments, frustrations and battles. But they
also share beliefs, pride and hope. As they leave behind more than a century of
turmoil, they look forward to a century of revival.

They envision a good life for the nearly 15,000 native people who live in the state.
These people are the relatives of tribes who are the original inhabitants of Nebraska
lands. The descendants of tribes relocated here after forced land cessions and broken
treaties.

The indigenous people will step into the next century on a path being cleared by
tribal leaders, including Louis DeRoin of the Ioway Tribe, Donald "Bucky" Pilcher of
the Sac and Fox, John Blackhawk of the Winnebago, Troy Saunsoci of the Omaha, Roger
Trudell of the Santee and Linda Stolle of the Ponca.

They represent six tribes who have reservations or tribal headquarters based in
Nebraska. Each one's style and experience varies, from cultural to well-established
and just emerging. All represent Native America and will help lead it into the next
century.
