GNOME uses a tool called jhbuild to automate much of the building from

You could start by making sure all instances of nautilus are killed (`pkill
-f nautilus` a few times?)
After that you could try and see if there are more useful debug messages by
running:
`*G_MESSAGES_DEBUG*=*all nautilus`*
and then reproducing the problem once more.
