It's a heatsink for his regulator.  A bit overkill but probably something that was laying around.  Clearly a hand made project from old parts but a genuine nixie clock.  Some of my stuff from 50 years ago looked like that but I liked it! Jeff Original message From: martin

Listing mentions it was built by his grandfather. It definitely looks "rough around the edges", but he certainly put his heart into it. If I ever end up having grandkids, I hope they will keep my clocks alive with the spare tubes I have rather than sell them on Ebay. -- You received this
