I think it's an NPN transistor but not sure. I can only test one
junction (B-C) and even that is reading higher than seems normal. I'm
going by the board markings and am not sure of the actual basing. The
board is from a Seth Thomas, Acquisition Clock that dates from around
1972 or so...
I had a similar massive darkening on a IN-14 tube some years ago. Repalced
tube and it have working good since then. I supposed air have come inside
tube.

A faulty inductor with some windings short cuted will make switching
transistor go hot.

Well.. I replaced the voltage regulator with JT's part, it appears to
be working perfectly.. a solid 5V right on the mark. I also replaced C1.

Kiran,
Measure the input voltage to your clock. If voltage from your DC wall
adapter have risen 7805 regulator will go hot. Also high voltage to
Nixie tubes might also rise if input voltage to clock is too high.

Hi folks, glad to find this
Darin,
Measure what you have for voltage from the power supply unit. If it is a
simple unregulated power supply voltage can be above 12V. Cheap power
supplies are often built of a transformer, four diodes and a capacitor.

There is a mini series about Bletchey Park. Very exciting, I thought
when I saw it on TV.
Exellent work! A piece of art. First Nixie Clock ever shown in a Museum?
