I don't really mind attachments from trusted sources.
But, on another group a member's computer became infected and even though he
is 'trusted' as far as his own input is concerned the result is that I still
really don't know.

If it were my job to say, I would just ban Windos from the network. The paradigm of running scans for known exploits rather than fixing bugs that allow exploits to work reminds me of the old saying concerning barn doors and loose horses.

I can't think of any "good arguments as to why we shouldn't have them
anyway..." , BUT I can think of even less arguments as to why we SHOULD have
them.

small attachmnets like data sheets can be handy in establishing a reference for a discussion. obviously for that to work, the posters have to be savy enough that they don't echo the attchmnets with every post.

And, didn't someone in the past complain that attachments didn't/wouldn't
get into the archive and are thus lost? [This might have been during the
previous (last year?) discussions re a new venue for the group.]

Yahoo Groups have a set of options that either attachments are not saved, or else they are saved in the web interface version but not sent out and so must be manually retreved one by one.

Finaly from another post - Top posting is a bad habit as it encourages folks to not cut out all the cruft in the thread. Before I retired I was forced to use Microsoft outlook, which made it almost impossible to write a correct email. Again see my first point- all software from Microsoft should be taken off the net until they figure out how to play nicely with the network. Mind you I hear from Aplle users that the Jobsien version is also getting strange.

Anyway that is all from me on this (off) topic
