have the origianl cabinet, I fabricated one, and made a front panel

I can send pics if you want to see the exterior.

Also have a bunch oh of #56 lamps Feel free to PM me if you can use

[neonixie-l] Heathkit GC-1195...

2020-04-25 Thread 'orange_glow_fan' via neonixie-l

I have the above clock. (it lights up more or less orange (Struggling to
stay on topic..))

It's the grandfathers clock version, that uses filament bulbs for the digit
segments.

After all these years, it has finally failed. It sits, displaying 12:00,
and refuses to do anything else. Normally, if there had been a power
failure, it would display a blinking 12:00. There is no blink.

I can not identify the 40 pin IC. No markings. If I look up the schematic,
it shows they used one of two ICs, depending on which manual I use. The
Heathkit part numbers are 443-702 or 443-848. The 443-848 seems to cross to
a MM5316, the other, 443-702, MAY cross over to a F3817PC. I can find a
datasheet for the MM5316, but not the F3817PC.

I guess what I need to know is if they are interchangeableI can locate
the MM5316, but the F3817PC seems to be made of unobtainium... The MM5316
actually crosses to an NTE number.

Any thoughts or inspirational advice appreciated...

Kerry

I agree. I forgot that one of the first things you should do is apply HV
(like 150-200V) directly to the tubes, with a series dropping resistor of
47K-220K, and make sure it glows under these conditions. I realize that
this assumes you have access to an electronics lab...

The SP-151 is durable; I built a wristwatch a few years ago with the same
unit my father got as a sample back in 1974. In fact, the prototype on my
workbench is still running after 5 years on the *same* charge I put on the
Li-ion battery (yeah, the battery drives the display and the RTC).

Somewhere in my archives is a set of schematics for using Sperry displays
as clocks; let me know if you need them. I recall the circuit requires some
switching to get the segments to light, so a scope will be necessary for
debugging.

2020-04-25 Thread 'jf...@my-deja.com' via neonixie-l
I had one of these evaluation kits, and I recall that the displays were
socketed. If you have an oscilloscope, you should do some basic
debugging. I would start at the power supply (one of my nixie clocks used
a Signal Transformer of the same vintage that died due to an open
primary). If you have all the proper dc voltages, I would next check the
logic level signals: the 60 Hz reference and the MUXed segment and digit
drives. Finally, check for proper waveforms at the anodes and cathodes.
Since nothing lights, I would suspect a bad power supply or a construction
error like swapping the pnp and npn transistors or backwards diodes.

I have mentioned this before, but the MM5314 does not have very good noise
rejection on the clock reference input, so power line spikes tend to make
it run fast.

Re: [neonixie-l] MPSA42 or MJE340?

2020-04-25 Thread 'jf...@my-deja.com' via neonixie-l
It should be easy to convert the 575 back into a tube curve tracer since it
was a modified 570 with the filament transformer removed and the sockets
changed. If you can find a meterless Hickok tube tester, you have the
sockets, switches and filament transformer you would need to convert it
back for a single tube. It can obviously be done by brute force, but I
have not figured out a clever way to set it up to do A-B comparisons so you
can find matched pairs. Some other things you might have to add are power
supplies for the screen and suppressor and the other elements you might
find in a pentagrid converter (or you could derive these from the voltages
applied to the other elements).

[neonixie-l] Re: Favorite component suppliers....

2020-04-25 Thread celzey11
I buy from all the usual online places, but there's a local old brick and
mortar independent family owned electronics store in Needham, MA called You Do
It Electronics I like to support. That place is great, it's like stepping back
in time to RadioShack in the 70s. They sell online too.

[neonixie-l] Re: Favorite component suppliers....

I'm based in Switzerland, in addition to mouser and digikey, the german
companies conrad and reichelt also offer a "swiss package". You can pay in
CHF with the correct taxes and no customs fees.
Sometimes I also order components from LCSC, for example if I need 100
DS3231MZ+ :-)

Re: [neonixie-l] MPSA42 or MJE340?

2020-04-25 Thread gregebert
As much as I would love to have my own curve-tracer, I have to be
practical. The transistors I select have SPICE models, so I simulate
everything in detail.

Nixie tubes, especially the rare or expensive ones like b7071 and R|Z568 ,
I generate I-V curves by hand for each segment/cathode. A curve-tracer
would help if it could export data to Excel. If I see failure or
degradation later on, I retake the I-V data and compare it to the original
measurements.
