@ David - that is an interesting idea - I did that already in another
design where I wanted to reduce the workload on an ESP8266 so I used a
Teensy running a state machine based piece of code to do the heavy lifting
 - the ESP8266 just fed data to the Teensy over a serial connection - I kid
you not - it works really well - though that is all running a lot slower
than what I need for this multiplexed display project.
I am actually hoping to do it all on ESP8266 this time round with a
couple of 595's driven via SPI transfers and some state-machine based code
 which manages the display.

The next part of my planning is to gain the understanding of what
 delays are required and where.

I am broadly assuming that I need to do things in the following order:

 {
Set the cathodes for the number to be displayed
 Delay before turning on anode
 Set the desired anode on
Wait for the desired 'anode on' time
 Set the anode off
Wait for the desired 'anode off ' time
Increment the current anode number (reset to 0 if we got past the max)
 }

In this way, the anode on and off times can be set - thus controlling
 fading etc

My next question is - do I need to wait at all after setting the
cathodes up and before turning the required anode on?

For the hardware I was thinking that one of the 595's would connect to
low sided drivers (MPSA42 etc) to ground the required cathodes whilst the
other 595 would connect to high sided drivers (MPSA42+MPSA92 etc) to
connect the desired anode to the HV supply.

I was then thinking that all anodes and cathodes would connect to
something like 80V via a suitable resistance - as per the Bally schematic
for driving multiplexed panaplex displays in pinball machines.

 As detailed here: bally_as2518_15_6digit.pdf (pinitech.com)

Am I anywhere near the right track on any of this?

[neonixie-l] Very much off-topic

2023-04-08 Thread martin martin
You've heard this one before..
While cleaning the garage, I found this. Probably built in the very late
70s.

Uses three 74154 decoders as counters for a near-simulation of a classic
roulette game.
The design was to let a large cap discharge to "see" the ball slow down.

Enjoy the 70s madness!

Another option is available here as a kit:
 https://threeneurons.wordpress.com/nixie-power-supply/hv-supply-kit/
The site also publishes full details of the circuit which I have used many
times with success on my own boards. It's a well established design using a
part which is relatively ancient but has proven reliable.
As Paul mentioned, layout of these things is often critical so always
look at the manufacturers recommendations for the layout of components,
tracks and copper fills as it can make the difference between a functional
power supply and something that gets too hot and releases the magic smoke
from time to time (speaking from my own experience).

The HV5622 has open drain outputs, so the cathodes will be left to
gradually float to whatever value they feel like. They probably won't do
this fast enough to prevent ghosting and you don't really want them to
float in a multiplexed clock anyway. I would suggest a push-pull chip for
 the cathodes, like the HV9808.

Re: [neonixie-l] best method for pin cleaning?

To all and thanks! I used a fine grain paper just a bit to rid the
corrosion and gentle scraping with a fine blade. All tubes light well and
look good. Soon to be enclosed in a hardwood box.

[neonixie-l] Re: Another of my "antique" SP-352 clocks

2021-01-18 Thread martin martin
Hi have the same 6 digit Heathkit. I do have the complete schematic if you
need it. My issue (not solved yet) is the power transformer runs too hot
to touch. All my voltages are good and the clock still keeps time - I built
it back in '77

It uses 3 SP352's for a 6 digit display. A MOSTEK 5017BA chip to run
 things.

The display doesnt light up, at all. In attempting to check voltages, I
cannot find any above about 125 (this seems VERY low for the panaplex

Anyone got any ideas, maybe a schematic for this guy?

[neonixie-l] Neon and Mercury

2021-01-15 Thread martin martin
Greetings all,

These are no longer available in the US as of 40+ years ago. I found one in
a box and had to put it back in to service!
They were sold as "silent switches". Small tube of mercury to make the
contact and the toggle switch has a large NE-2 for a nice looking night
light.

Recently started up a longtime nixie project I've had in mind. Quite
ambitious (for me at least), and something that hasn't quite been done
before to my knowledge. This is a 4 tube, bluetooth enabled (nrf52832 mcu),
direct drive (not multiplexed) watch with burroughs b5755r nixies that I'm
currently getting out of my head and onto paper. It will include features
such as capacitive touch buttons, programmable accelerometer, automatic
light sensor, removable 14500 lithium battery, and smartphone app for all
sorts of display effects and options. No LED backlights on this one; its
 all about the neon!

It's nowhere near complete; the design currently exists in the digital
domain. I'm closing in on the first "complete" revision in the next few
weeks. Current dimensions are 59mm square by 28mm deep. Its quite large to
be hanging off of the wrist.. but are there really any rules when it comes
 to a timepiece as unconventional?

The software development will also be a tremendous task. Slow and
 steady wins the race here!
