It's really amazing how many oddball (by today's standard)

Hi

That is so good and so interesting. The tube construction is quiet
different to the NIMO tube that we see around that displays only single
characters. So as Greg suggests it is a follow on patent ... you have
given me new leads to follow.

Coincidentally, there is going to be a LOT of activity on my bench for the
next 2 weeks with these 6-tube NIMO clock board sets, and I will post
updates from mission control. There is 1 final wet dress rehearsal this
weekend, and the countdown is on to fire-up 6 tubes.

I feel sad for the folks at IEE who put so much time and effort into
the NIMO tube. It's technologically clever, but a colossal execution and
marketing failure; it missed the market window by about 10 years.

[neonixie-l] Re: NIMO

2020-06-03 Thread gregebert
Jorg - Are you using AC, or DC for your filaments ?

I use a center-tapped 2.5V transformer, with a series dropping resistor and
fuse, for each tube filament.
The center-tap of the filament transformer is driven to a DC voltage to set
the correct bias.

I have my NIMO board running with 4.8 volts of bias, meaning that when a
numeral is off, it's at -4.8VDC relative to the filament.
Since my driver uses a 10V supply, when a numeral is on, it's at +5.2VDC
relative to the filament.

It takes some experimenting with those values, and the anode voltage, to
get the best image. Right now I'm using 1980V for the anode supply, and I'm
measuring around 30uA average current. Some numerals require more current
than others.

Here's an old youtube video from last year, and there's no ghosting:

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: NIMO

2018-03-28 Thread Dylan Distasio
That price seems insane. It makes it tempting for me to sell the ones I am
sitting on, but I am still hoping to do a clock with them. As a point of
reference on price, I bought 4 on fleabay in 2016 for $100 each (which
granted I have not tested due to not getting around to putting together a
proper PSU, but I believe are NOS and working based on seller reputation,
and look in excellent condition). Some are probably scoffing that I spent
that much without testing, but I took a calculated risk and didn't have any
way to in a timely fashion. I'm still a piker at building my own PSUs
unfortunately.

Anyways, as a tube hoarder, I have no intention to sell them, especially
since I really do want to make a clock out of them, but a gain of over 300%
in less than two years wouldn't be too shabby! I'm sure there are some
tube elders of mine on list laughing that I paid that much compared to
whatever they're holding, but I was unfortunately late to the tube game.

[neonixie-l] Re: Nimo tube

2012-01-30 Thread Nick
Its odd, for ages none of these were around, then a bunch have
appeared - I bought a sizeable lot a couple of months ago for a few
bucks each, but they have gone for USD 100+ in the past - I know that
at least one other list member has a sizeable batch too.

They are great fun, but require a hight anode voltage and a special
socket (actually a modified 12-pin compactron as they have an anode
stud half way up the tube). The correct sockets (with anode spring)
are extremely rare - High on my list of jobs is to get some made up
using a standard 12-pin compactron socket, some laser-cut acrylic and
a bit of phosphor bronze spring...

If you are happy playing with 1000V+ (albeit at a tiny current) and
have a 100 bucks to spare, buy one and have a play...

[neonixie-l] Re: NIMO socket wanted (even just to borrow!)

2011-12-03 Thread Nick
Yup its basically a B12C compactron, but its the mechanics of the
spring clip I was after. I have some drawings that show roughly how it
was done, but I've never seen a real socket and was just interested!

  Thanks

Isn't that just a standard 12 pin Compactron socket and a side clip?

Nope they have a standard base but a final anode connection on the
side of the tube - a special socket was made that connects that too...
I've never seen one of these, but I was hoping that someone out there
might have a spare to sell/swap...

Cheers

RE: [neonixie-l] Re: NIMO tube socket wanted...

2011-04-12 Thread Tidak Ada
I habe added a drawing of the NIMO socket and base from a datasheet I have
(pdf) to the photo directory named 'NIMO Socket'.
May be it is practical for understanding the connection of the acelleration
anode.
This side contact has an offsett of 18°± 3' to pin 12.
The drawing of the socket shows clearly the situation.

Here the link to the drawing [ http:

please remove the space between http: and the rest of the link.

It seems the final anode is connected by a spring steel tag connected
to an insulating stand-off.

I'll make some on the laser cutter...

Aha! I thought it was a regular Compactron socket.

You just need that little spring clip with the nylon standoff to handle 1.5kV.

IEE is still in business. Ask them if part number 14476 is in stock.

Whether somebody makes some or if IEE still has them, I'll take a
