Project Title: Come Grow With Us

Project Begin & End Dates: 9/16/02 to 6/25/03

Project Summary:
Travel through our cycle of seeds as we investigate how a seed becomes a
plant. This hands-on project will introduce children to the life cycle of
plants. Communicate with other classrooms to see how different climates
affect plant growth.
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: Information Technology, Science

Technologies Used: Email

Full Project Description:
This project will run in the fall and again in the spring. You may
participate at either time.
We are interested in comparing and contrasting plant growth data with other
classrooms in environments different from ours. Students will germinate
seeds (lima beans, peas, and/or corn) in the classroom and observe and
record the growth over an eight-week period. They will enter data on
recording sheets and graph the plant's growth. Students will also keep a
journal of their observations. Classes will share the data with other
classes through e-mail communication and through the project website.

Classes may want to create different growing environment to observe
differences under varying conditions. For example, put some seeds near the
window and others in a dark part of the classroom. Plant some seeds the
cup, put the cup in a zip lock bag, water it once and observe the
greenhouse effect.

Participating classrooms may choose to have individual students grow their
own plants or do their plantings as a group, but each class must have one
model that will be used for data collection.

Classes will photograph their plants four times during the eight-week
period (every two weeks) and email these photos to their partner classroom.

Growing Tips/Options:
1. Soak seeds in water overnight
2. Provide each student (or group of students) with seeds, soil and
plastic cups
3. For best viewing of roots, grow some seeds in a zip lock bag and
then transplant to a cup once roots are formed.

Activity 1
Plant the seeds
Activity 2
Observe and record information - Suggestions
* Size, color and shape of leaves
*        Length of stem
* Root observations (if you plant a seed in a zip lock bag)
Activity Three
Summarize your class findings and send to the project coordinator
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and your partner with the digital photos or
drawings. Optional extension activities will be provided on the project
website. Classes may submit these if desired.

Objectives:
* Students understand the life cycle of plants and the conditions needed to
germinate seeds
* Using the scientific method, students will predict, observe, measure and
record the growth of their plants over several weeks
* Students will exchange information with another class in order to compare
and analyze growth under different environmental conditions
* Students will learn about other communities, climates and geographies
through the exchange of this information

Earn the Certificate in Accessible Information Technology
and do it all online from home: http://easi.cc/workshop.htm

The ALA has made a commitment to make libraries, online and onsite, more
accessible to consumers with disabilities. With the tight budgets, few
libraries have staff trained to live up to this laudable commitment. EASI
(Equal Access to Software and Information) provides a series of online
courses and also a Certificate in Accessible Information Technology. Many
of us have been "print impaired" all of our lives, and we are excited that
we too can be library users. We have been working for a decade to help
librarians live up to this exciting challenge.

Check out our online courses and the Certificate at

Two courses begin Sept. 3 and run for a month:

MAKE FUNDING FOR EDUCATION RECESSION PROOF
The hard truth is that tens of thousands of children will be left behind
when the new school year starts in September unless our federal and state
leaders act now, put students first, and commit to making education
funding recession-proof.

So far, they are not doing enough. After nearly a
decade of double-digit increases in federal support for education, the
White House budget for 2002 recommends just a 3 percent jump -- a figure
that barely exceeds current inflation projections.

And some governors in both parties are proposing across-the-board budget cuts
that threaten the progress many states have made toward raising achievement
for every
student. The gap between platitudes and performance is clearly growing,
but a recent poll released by Public Education Network and Education Week
shows that voters remain focused on education issues and are beginning to
demand the same level of accountability from their elected officials that
they have come to expect from their local schools.

Indeed, the poll
suggests that self-anointed education candidates who play hooky on school
funding this year may find themselves put to the test this November.
