Maybe the scams topic does not yet appear in your curriculum guide or your textbooks, but it should. Quatloos.com is The Cyber-Museum of Scams and Frauds. It's among several reputable sites on internet fraud (Quatloos lists others you can trust), but... "Quatloos has taken the additional step of making the description of these scams and traps as humorous as possible, so that you can enjoy yourself while reading about them, and then hopefully remember them for a long, long time to come!" It's likely that your students are already receiving email from cabinet ministers in Africa or high- sounding businesspeople, requesting help to move large sums of money into the U.S. in return for a few million dollars of their own. Several examples are posted at this Web site so you can teach your students how to spot the frauds. Quatloos is a non-profit corporation, sponsored by the offshore branch of a perfectly reputable U.S. financial corporation, First American Global Advisors Ltd. (Nevis). Jay Adkisson, one of First American's lawyers, founded Quatloos and still supplies some articles to it, plus a little advertising for his financial advice newsletter. ---------------------- Network Nuggets is a free service of the Community Learning Network Website (www.cln.org) and the Open Learning Agency of British Columbia (www.openschool.bc.ca). One of those measures is a cut to the DCPS budget of $30 million, down from a level originally set at $771 million. This cut is on top of an already acknowledged deficit for next year of $45 million (due to personnel and technology costs); bringing the total DCPS cuts necessary to $75 million. NOTE: The Board of Education will hold a public forum on Wednesday 10/2 at 6PM (825 N. Capital St, 5th floor), in order to hear from parents, students, and other community members before they decide how to address the cuts. Members of the public are encouraged to attend! Board of Education Passes Public-Private Development Partnership Policy On September 17th, after several months of work, the Board approved a final rulemaking on public-private development partnership policy. The policy provides guidelines and procedures by which DCPS will enter into public-private partnerships to develop DCPS-controlled real estate assets, such as school buildings. In very broad terms, the process is as follows: (1) DCPS will hold a public hearing for the purpose of receiving suggestions on potential sites; (2) DCPS will develop a list of potential sites, publish the list in the DC Register, notify related schools and ANC's, and take public comments; (3) DCPS will recommend sites to the Board of Education; and (4) the Board will select sites to move forward for partnerships. For a copy of the final policy, visit the Board website at "http://www.k12.dc.us/dcps/boe/boe_frame.html" DCPS Formulating Parent Involvement Policy DCPS has assembled a parent involvement task force, which includes members of the community, to help formulate Board policy on this topic. They are using PTA guidelines to inform its definition and strategy. The policy will require the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of parent involvement programs throughout DCPS. A proposed policy, in the form of a rulemaking, has been developed, and will be voted on by the Board's Committee on Operations and Vision this Friday at 10AM. The Committee meeting is at 825 N. Capital St, NE, and is open to the public. If approved by the Committee, it will then go before the full Board for a vote, and then be subject to a public comment period. DCPS Formulating Out of Boundary Policy An ad hoc committee from Wards 5 and 6 has been meeting to help formulate out of boundary attendance policy for DCPS. The Superintendent has also presented a proposed policy to the Board for committee review. DCPS Examining Staggered School Openings DCPS has formed a group, which includes community members, to study changing to staggered school opening times in the mornings. The school system has said it could save up to 3 million dollars in bus transportation costs with staggered openings. Update on DCPS Capital Improvement Program The following is a school-by-school update on the DCPS program to modernize or /replace all of its public schools buildings. We invite K - 12 classes from every continent to study our website of architecture through history and then create a virtual tour of architecture in their respective parts of the world. Surf to <http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/schools/drew/a&a/project.htm>http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/schools/drew/a&a/project.htm to read all about it and register! The emphasis should be on the classical elements of architecture showcased on our site and how they are represented in the buildings of your town. The virtual tour can be presented in web page format, as a slide show, or through the use of digital video. Your tour should also include examples of student art work which reflect awareness and understanding of the architectural elements evident in your community. Project objectives are: to integrate arts across the curriculum through a study of architecture to make use of technology in creating bridges across cultures to promote the Language Arts through the processes of reading, writing and researching to promote Mathematics through the study of Geometry and its concepts of shape, line and symmetry to promote the Sciences through the study of physics, engineering, machines, and climate to promote the Social Studies through the study of history, geography and cultures Timeline: October 1 - November 30, 2002 Registration December 1 - January 31, 2003 Research February 1 - April 30, 2003 Create virtual tour May 1, 2003 Submit virtual tour to post on project web site Project: The final project is a multimedia presentation of architecture in your community which is to be presented in web page, slide show or video format. Theapplication used to develop your virtual tour must be able to be viewed online (with the use of a plugin if necessary); project presentations should not require the purchase of software to be viewed online. Each project will be posted in the Art & Architecture prohject web site as part of a digital archive of architecture from around the world, across history and culture. Once a virtual tour is posted on the project web site it will remain there at the discretion of the project sponsor. Participating classes will be asked to create a reciprocal link from their school web site to the project web site. A project icon will be supplied with directions on how to make this link. Your local webmaster will be able to easily assist you in this process. Teacher Support: A mailing list will be established for teachers of all participating classes to promote communication, interaction and professional support for one another as we build our projects together across the miles. This will be a private list through which only teachers registered with the project will have access. Under no circumstances will the mailing addresses from this list be given to anyone outside of this project for any purpose. Through the use of this list, we will build a learning community which well help each of us to enjoy success as we work on our project with our students.
