Subject: [DIGITALDIVIDE] new public computing study

We have finished a new study relating to public computing and the digital
divide, and we would welcome comments from listmembers.

Williams, Kate and Abdul Alkalimat. "A Census of Public Computing in
Toledo, Ohio." To appear in _Shaping the Network Society: The New Role of
Civic Society in Cyberspace_, edited by Douglas Schuler and Peter Day, MIT
Press, publisher.

ABSTRACT: An enumeration of public computing sites in Toledo, Ohio,
identifies 253 sites, proposes a methodology, and elaborates a model. The
model is that government sites are distributed equally across an urban
area, commercial and university sites are distributed more to higher
socioeconomic locales, and community sites are distributed to the highest
and lowest socioeconomic locales and less to middle strata locales.

Try Google when you can't find lesson plans. I just put "lesson plans
Gettysburg Address" in Google's search engine and it brought up
several good ones on it and the Civil War. Here they are:

This site features Japanese language lessons with sound and Japanese
characters. And you can sample some Japanese story problems from
Japan's Junior High School math placement test that is given to 12
year olds. The full test features 225 story problems and each is
timed from 1 to 5 minutes. The problems are logic-based and consist
of about 20 different types of story problems. The point of this site
is to begin providing quality math content based on world standards.
The Japanese continue to place among the top 3 countries world-wide
in terms of their students' math abilities. The US was recently
ranked #14 in international math placement. Would be nice if US
students were exposed to international level math content and this
site represents a step in that direction. This site also includes an
online dictionary, links and an optional newsletter registration.

We are a group of teachers who are starting a project in our class, children
between 6 and 8 years old, where we want to learn more about how children live

Full Project Description:
Newsday has been a long-time favorite project at the Global Schoolhouse since
it
was introduced on the FrEdMail Network in the 1980's.

The complete project description, along with extensive curriculum support
materials to help you conduct the project, are at
http://www.gsh.org/project/newsday

Newsday is a multi-curricular project in which your students produce their own
newspaper based on the news articles submitted to the Newsday web site by
cooperating student correspondents. Your students become news gatherers and
reporters, editors, layout and graphics artists, and publishers. Participation
on an international scale leads to understanding of broad issues which
transcend
local concerns. This project can involve your students in weeks of
cross-curricular activity.

You can use a wide variety of methods to produce the papers, ranging from
simple
word processor cut and paste to full desktop publishing packages. In addition
to
publishing and distributing a printed hard copy of the newspaper, participants
are also encouraged to publish their newspapers on the World Wide Web

You will also receive a copy of each newspaper produced by the other
participants in the Newsday Project.

Objectives:
This project makes your students eager writers and readers... the finest
foundation for basic or advanced literacy developed. Newsday addresses and
improves:

* Academic Literacy Skills: reading, writing, editing, revising, interviewing,
literature appreciation, and understanding

* Social Skills:
cooperative learning, leadership, listening, discussing, encouraging, and
sharing

Technical Skills: word processing, file management, keyboarding, page layout &
design, publishing

Telecommunications, email: uploading and downloading, communicating

Grade levels appropriate for this project include upper elementary, junior
high,
