But despite its powerful feature set, for most people the power of Excel goes largely untapped. "Much of the power of Excel is 'under the hood.' There is a great deal that Excel either does not allow you to do or does not allow you to do easily through its user interface," comments Steven Roman, who authored the new edition of "Writing Excel Macros with VBA" (O'Reilly, US $34.95). With the recent release of Excel 10, also known as "Excel XP," Roman updated this popular book, which enables users to custom program Excel using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). "Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is primarily for Excel users who are not programmers but would like to be--those people who "have begun to appreciate the power of Excel and want to take advantage of its more advanced features or just accomplish tasks more easily," Roman says. The book offers a solid introduction to VBA, Microsoft's easy-to-learn programming environment that lets users choose and modify pre-selected sections of code with a graphical user interface, and introduces the Excel object model, the means by which Excel can be controlled programmatically. Programmers not familiar with this object model will find the book to be a useful primer. Roman, a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the California State University, Fullerton, with more than 30 books to his credit, offers a concise, straightforward tutorial--peppered by interesting and useful examples to solve common problems--that enables readers to "ferret out the facts" without much handholding. The book moves at a relatively rapid pace from general introduction to programming, beginning with information on the Visual Basic Editor and the Excel VBA programming environment, which features a complete, state-of-the-art integrated development environment for writing, running, testing, and debugging VBA macros. "Given the enormity of the subject, not everything is covered, nor should it be," Roman says. "The goal here is to acquaint readers with the main points of Excel programming, enough so that they can continue their education on their own." Once readers have finished the book, Roman insists, they will know enough about Excel VBA to begin creating effective working programs. With "Writing Excel Macros with VBA," power users can take a close look at the object model to determine which elements of Excel--workbooks, worksheets, charts and cells among them--are accessible through code, and how they can be controlled programmatically. The object model for Excel XP has 37 new objects, or nearly 200 altogether, but Excel power users need to be familiar with only a handful of them to write effective macros. Roman covers these essential objects and includes a discussion of many more objects as well. The new edition also includes a chapter on "Smart Tags," a notable feature Microsoft introduced with Excel XP. "Writing Excel Macros with VBA" is for advanced Excel users who want to "get more power out of this formidable application" and achieve maximum control and flexibility, Roman says. The authors, Robert Bruce Thompson and Barbara Fritchman Thompson, were determined to emphasize the useful--not just the interesting--in this handy reference. "We quickly found out why there was so much interesting information, but relatively little useful information in most PC hardware books," says Barbara Fritchman Thompson. "Interesting is quick and easy to write. Useful is slow and hard, because you actually have to do all the stuff you've written about." Carefully researched and written, "PC Hardware in a Nutshell, Second Edition" is packed with unbiased information, including how-to advice for specific components, ample reference material, and a comprehensive case study on building a PC. Concise but complete, this book provides an enormous amount of timeless information intended for anyone who buys, builds, upgrades, or repairs PCs in a corporate, small business, or home setting. "If you want to buy a PC, this book tells you what to look for--and what to look out for," says coauthor Robert Bruce Thompson. "If you want to build a PC, this book explains, component-by-component, the key parts of a PC, describes the important characteristics of each, provides buying guidelines, lists recommended products (by brand name and model), and takes you step-by-step through building the PC. If you have an older PC, this book tells you what you need to know to upgrade it--if it makes sense to do so--as well as when it makes more sense simply to retire it to less demanding duties. Finally, if your PC breaks, this book tells you what you need to know to troubleshoot the problem and then choose and install replacement parts." "PC Hardware in a Nutshell, Second Edition" is a compact guide, accessible to the ordinary reader and invaluable for the seasoned professional. What the critics said about the first edition: "I have to read books like this for a living, and this is the first one I've come across which is actually enjoyable. It contains the right amount of sensible advice and information on relevant topics without going over the top into useless detail and is, I'm sure, going to become indispensable. Highly recommended to both beginners--whom it won't bamboozle--and experienced hands, whether they're looking for information on what to buy or more detailed reference material." --Chris Ward-Johnson, The Times (of London) "There's not another book like this, and if you do much with computers you need a good reference work on hardware. Of course there are massively larger books on the subject, but that's just the point: most of the time you're not looking for a long essay on the subject, you need information, and reliable judgment, both of which Robert Bruce Thompson is highly--I am tempted to say uniquely--qualified to give. You have here a well written book by someone who understands the subject. It's about computer hardware and nearly everyone needs a good opinionated reference work on that subject, provided the opinions are sound, which in Thompson's case they certainly are. It's published by O'Reilly, which means it's well edited by editors who resist the temptation to become unacknowledged collaborators. It's really the best book you'll find on this subject. And if that doesn't persuade you to buy this book, I doubt anything else I can say would." --Jerry Pournelle, Chaos Manor "I kept a copy of "PC Hardware in a Nutshell" at my elbow. Chapter 2 is likely to save you the cost of the book by itself." --Jim Aiken, Keyboard "An excellent book for anyone who uses or is shopping for a PC." --Phil Smith III, Monitor "In this superb new release authors Thompson and Thompson produce a wonderful work on computer hardware that stands above many existing hardware works now on the market." --Dale Ferris, Golden Triangle PC Club Additional Resources: Chapter 28, "Building a PC," is available free online at: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pchardnut2/chapter/index.html For more information about the book, including Table of Contents, index, author bios, and samples, see: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/pchardnut2/ For a cover graphic in jpeg format, go to: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/graphics/book_covers/hi-res/0596003536.jpg PC Hardware in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition By Robert Bruce Thompson & Barbara Fritchman Thompson ISBN 0-596-00353-6, 804 pages, $39.95 (US), $61.95 (CAN) [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1-800-998-9938 1-707-827-7000 http://www.oreilly.com About O'Reilly O'Reilly & Associates is the premier information source for leading-edge computer technologies. The FAO cited inadequate infrastructure and funds, high illiteracy, lack of training and a paucity of women in media jobs as factors contributing to rural women's limited access to information. "The new information technologies hold out a unique opportunity for women in the developing countries to speak out and to be more visible and less isolated," the organization said. Sophie Treinen, an information officer in the FAO's Gender Equality and Population Division, added that such technologies "are not a luxury but an essential tool for sustainable development." Outlining the inequalities that exist with regard to technology, the FAO said that more than 70 percent of Internet users live in Europe and North America, where over 90 percent of data on Africa is stored, and that "similar discrepancies exist between the urban and rural zones and between men and women." Women comprise 7 percent of Internet users in China and 17 percent in South Africa, the FAO said. The Know How Conference is being held during the International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women [http://www.isis.or.ug/knowhow/], which began yesterday and ends Friday at Kampala's Makerere University (FAO release, July 19, http://www.fao.org/english/newsroom/news/2002/7600-en.html). One program is the mentoring program in which a person with experience in a field or role that is new to the client, works with that client over a period of time and helps them to develop their skills in these areas. AIB has membership in many countries of the world. AIB members traveling to or needing to do business in a country new to them can participate in the Area Host Program of AIB. AIB has featured a valuable resource for its membership, the Area Host Program, for a long time. One meets in a country new to them with an AIB member from that country over coffee (I believe tea and orange juice may also be acceptable) and find out from that person key information about the new country that will help the newly arrived better conduct business there. But how much information can you learn sitting in a restaurant or coffee shop over a beverage in just one hour? I would suspect that one will learn a great deal more if they come prepared for this conference. The United States government, other countries and other private sources have web resources for country information, like those listed above, that will be a tremendous help for starting and advancing knowledge of a country in whice one needs to start working for whatever reason. Indeed, with this kind of good preparation, there is the danger that your AIB area host may be so impressed with your prior knowledge that that person may recommend you to his friends, colleagues and business associates after you show how prepared that you are.
