Feds tout e-learning site for government workers

By PATRICK THIBODEAU
JULY 23, 2002

WASHINGTON -- The federal government is turning to the Web to help train
its 1.9 million employees, a move
officials believe will save money and improve productivity and the
attractiveness of government services.

"This is modern training," Mark Forman, who heads IT planning at the
White House Office of Management and Budget,
said at a news conference today. "This is as good as any world-class
company, perhaps better than most."

Winning this praise is a new Web-based training site that uses 3-D
graphics to direct employees to a preliminary list of
30 online courses, covering such topics as computers, management,
customer service and ethics. Many more courses
will be added in the months ahead.

The online educational effort is part of a broader e-government
initiative to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of
government,
largely through economies of scale. Training today is typically handled
by individual agencies.

A few weeks ago, someone requested sites for finding quotations that
could
be used in the classroom. I receive an e-mail resource from ASCD
(Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) called
"SmartBrief" that has great links of interest to all educators including
an
interesting quote at the end of each post. I believe that you can
subscribe (free) to this resource at <www.smartbrief.com/ascd/> if
you'd
like to check it out. I have found it a valuable resource.

"Infertility is a disease that affects the reproductive organs of both

Presidential Decision Directives

With intensified concerns about terrorism and the changes in government
such as the creation of a Homeland Security Department, a national
security genre of Presidential Document is becoming increasingly
important. These are the Presidential Directives and below are some
resources that help make them findable from the Truman Administration up
to the present time.

Excerpt from this Page:

"The National Security Council (NSC) is the principal forum for
Presidential consideration of foreign policy issues and national
security matters. Persuant to policy review directives, the NSC gathers
facts and
views of appropriate Government agencies, conducts analyses, determines
alternatives, and presents to the President policy choices for decision.
The President's decisions are announced by decision directives.
