You are right about the plug-ins. Following the example in the wiki, I was able to compile the snmpd agent and have it respond to a custom mib-node entry. The idea of snmp sub-agents comes from the SNMP protocol itself, I believe. You need those extra sub-agents on a system to respond to requests/
