Odd. Turns out that "star", which is the verison of tar we decided
decades ago was the only one that produced tar archives that worked on
every platform we could find, messes up when overwriting

gzip: stdin: decompression OK, trailing garbage ignored
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
